Presented as NYCC’s 2024 Annual Gala Presentation, Ragtime brought Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty, and Lynn Ahrens’ production back to the stage under the direction of Lear deBessonet. David Rockwell and the scenic team were asked to create a design that could hold the musical’s epic scale while maintaining the immediacy and simplicity of the Encores! format. The design used a restrained architectural vocabulary of freestanding doorways and moving staircases, layered with projection and lighting, to move fluidly between the disparate worlds of New Rochelle, Harlem, and the immigrant communities of Lower Manhattan. The scenery provided a framework for the intersecting stories of the three families navigating an America in the midst of profound social and cultural change.
