Originally, a two-week Off-Broadway series at NYCC Encores! to celebrate the life and work of the late legendary composer Stephan Sondheim—Directed by Lear deBessonet, this Tony Award-winning 2022 production of Into the Woods was extended at Encores! and later On-Broadway at the St. James Theatre. David Rockwelll and the scenic team were asked to create a dynamic set design that honored the history of the original staging whilst creating an aesthetic that felt current and contextual. The design references fairy-tale book illustrations through its materiality—with its paper textured birch trees, textile beanstalk, painted moon, and hand crafted dollhouse, the set design gave this musical allegory a storybook backdrop.
